Almaty’s population stands at 2.3 million. Together with the Almaty region, the combined population exceeds 3.8 million.

Economic indicators

Almaty's Gross Regional Product (GRP) amounts to $60 billion, and with the Almaty region included, $73 billion. The per capita GRP in Almaty reaches $26,400, comparable to the levels of Eastern European countries.

Industry leadership

Almaty generates a significant share of Kazakhstan’s national Gross Value Added (GVA) in key sectors:

  • Finance: 58%
  • Information and Communications: 54%
  • Professional Services: 40%

Additionally, Almaty dominates the trade sector, accounting for 30–40% of both wholesale and retail markets nationwide

According to experts, the Almaty region hosts 64% of all domestic tourist visitors. About 53% of foreign tourists arriving in Kazakhstan choose Almaty as their destination.
